about

The idea of “ShaLOM”, a fine documentary in music
of unique places in Israel, was suggested to me
in Germany in late 1996.
At the time, it appeared rather untenable, but with the help of
good friends who became as excited about the idea as we did,
we managed to produce the project in May of 1997
with a great support by the Diaspora Museum in Tel Aviv
and "The Association for promoting Tourism in Israel".

The schedule, carefully planned by Michael Weisser
and myself, was tight, our guiding principle was
to cover the main locations that we had designated,
while allowing maximal flexibility to absorb the atmosphere and the
natural sounds, which were abundant.

The production was accompanied by visual documentation
by Michael Weisser and Malka Keret,
who obtained uniquely pictures.

The spirit among the production crew was at least as important
as the production itself. The challenge of a round-the-clock assignment
for a period of several days
is a large one. In our case, the spirit of tobetherness and shared
commitment to the production was optimal.
We spent long hours talking about and absorbing the unusual experiences
we were having, and returned
with a great sense of satisfaction.

With help from the mysterious Canadian-born composer Cléo de Mallio, they recorded over 20 sonically diverse albums between 1987 and 2000.
